After an unforgettable time exploring New Zealand’s South Island, we turned our sights to the North Island for a blend of natural beauty, wellness, and Māori culture, stopping in Rotorua and Auckland along the way.
Getting There:
We took a direct flight from the Gold Coast to Auckland, then hopped on a quick domestic flight to Rotorua. Within 45 minutes, we arrived in this geothermal paradise, surrounded by lakes, geysers, and hot springs.
Rotorua: The Heart of New Zealand’s Geothermal Wonders
The Land of Geothermal Magic
Rotorua’s stunning landscapes are dotted with active geysers, hot springs, and bubbling mud pools. Known as “Sulphur City” for its distinct mineral scent, it’s a wellness destination deeply infused with Māori heritage.
Relax and Rejuvenate at Wai Ariki
Our wellness journey began at Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa, where we were guided through a rejuvenating experience. Overlooking Lake Rotorua, the spa offers traditional mud treatments, hot springs, and steam rooms laden with healing crystals. A perfect way to soak in the spirit of Rotorua!
Discovering Māori Arts at Te Puia
Next, we explored Te Puia, a cultural hub dedicated to indigenous arts and education. We joined a guided tour that introduced us to traditional Māori carving, weaving, and cultural practices. Te Puia’s geothermal landscape is a sight to behold, with its iconic Pohutu Geyser and bubbling mud pools. Our tour ended with a delicious Hangi feast—a traditional Māori meal cooked underground, blending fresh ingredients with a smoky, earthy flavor.
Staying at Pullman Rotorua
We stayed at the centrally located Pullman Rotorua, a hotel that’s both stylish and sustainable. Rooms offer views of the lake and city, and the on-site restaurant, Barrel & Co., features locally sourced dishes celebrating the North Island’s flavors.
Adventure Awaits with Katoa Jet and Skyline Luge
No trip to Rotorua is complete without some adventure! We joined Katoa Jet for a high-speed lake tour, taking in natural landmarks and Rotorua’s stunning volcanic landscape. For more thrills, we headed to Skyline Rotorua for the iconic Luge track. The park also boasts mountain biking trails, the Sky Swing, and the Stratosphere Restaurant with breathtaking views. Wine lovers shouldn’t miss Volcano Winery, where a scenic gondola ride leads to a tasting room with panoramic vistas.
Auckland: A Fusion of Modernity and Māori Heritage
Our final night was spent at the newly opened Te Arikinui Pullman Auckland Hotel, conveniently located near the airport. This stunning hotel merges contemporary design with Māori culture, and the rooftop restaurant Te Kaahu showcases New Zealand’s finest local produce, expertly crafted by Māori chef Nancye Pirini.
