The southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef is home to an array of islands and beachside villages, like 1770 and Agnes Water. Located on the tip of the Peninsula in the Gladstone Region, the area is immersed in nature from national parks to a pristine reef.
At first glance you imagine the twin towns of 1770 and Agnes Water are one, but as we explore the region, we realise they are quite diverse with plenty on offer.
The name 1770 is discerning as its part of Australia’s dark history, when Mr Cook arrived to colonise the great southern land. As I dig deeper this stunning, partly untouched natural wonder is the gateway to the reef and borders one of the last stops out to the Coral Sea.
Where in the world can you access a stunning reef and pumping surf break at the same time, all in a day on the water. Agnes Water and 1770 are ideal to stay on the mainland to navigate your adventure out to the reef and beyond.
The town of 1770 is situated on the tip of the Peninsula with the Coral Sea and Bustard Bay on either side. The region is home to a small residential population and in high season becomes a bustling tourist destination.
More recently Agnes Water has seen a surge in popularity all year round, largely due to the influx of the domestic traveller and in part having been discovered.
The area is a popular destination for the Sunshine Coast as its only a couple of hours north-but lately city folk have been venturing further afield to explore the Coral Coast.
Agnes Water has a plethora of accommodation options from ocean front caravan parks to farm stays to luxe beach houses. The shopping village is central to town with a handful of eateries, grocery stores, a country bakery and a newly opened Gelato Bar-1770 Gelato Co.
We opt to stay at a pet friendly 40-acre property just outside of Agnes Water with incredible views back across the ocean. The Summit 1770 prides itself on being one of the best dog campgrounds in OZ.
There are modern cottages, caravan sites and glamping facilities to choose from. We stay in a down to earth donger with shared facilities, outdoor camp fire and dreamy sunset views across the green acres to the ocean beyond.
Take a day trip out to Lady Elliot Island, Lady Musgrave and Fitzroy Island and you’ll find an array of fishing spots, deep sea reef for diving and pumping surf breaks-largely untouched.
We get the nod the place for coffee and lunch is 1770 Getaway (located in Agnes Water) a relaxing garden kitchen and resort set in natural rainforest surrounds. The longstanding café is family run with a home baked menu and a spotlight on local producers and makers.
In just over 5 hours north of Brisbane you can be snorkelling on the Southern Barrier Reef, surfing Coral Coast breaks and relaxing in 1770 and Agnes Waters natural surrounds.
