We head north from Byron Bay to dig a little deeper in and around Fortitude Valley and New Farm for a much needed city fix.
Fondly known as the Valley the area is a short drive from the Brisbane CBD and holds its own as a popular destination. Fading from daytime eateries and boutique shopping to night clubbing and whisky bar hopping.
We kickstart our weekender by finding an affordable accommodation option and check into the Sage Hotel James St, conveniently located between the bustling shopping precinct and peaceful suburb of New Farm.
The hotel holds a tranquil space, fresh air flows through from the large garden decks that adjoin the suites. The rooms are contemporary in design yet comfortable at the same time with friendly staff to greet you on arrival.
Conveniently located next door to the QA hotel theres an array of food options from the ‘Botanical Eatery’ to ‘The Farrier’ under ground whisky bar and supper club.
We take a short stroll up the hill to the heritage listed New Farm Park adjacent to the Brisbane Powerhouse where there’s a plethora of activities to experience. We take a tour of the up cycled powerhouse which is adorned with posters of past and upcoming artists, comedians and musicians.
New Farm Park is the place to flop, grab a takeaway coffee from Mary Maes and relax in the garden surrounds with the Brisbane River and city views as the backdrop.
We head back for lunch to James St and choose one of the newest additions to the thriving food scene, City Winery. Open plan design the team have taken over the old Campos Coffee roasting house. From the front barrel house to the tasting room and rear dining hall complete with open fire hearth the City Winery is a stylish as it is rustic.
Time to shop until we drop we are on a mission to uncover Australian made designers and to our surprise the James St precinct is full of home grown favourites- like Zimmerman, Dinosaur Designs and St Agni.
Theres an elegant array of modern homeware stores, day spas, fresh food markets , bars and eateries that add to the valley vibe. Well known Calile Hotel is home to a lobby bar, Hellenika Greek restaurant and recently opened fine dining option SK Steak and Oyster.
The James St precinct is ideally located central to the charm of New Farm and the nightlife of Fortitude Valley-making it the ideal weekender for those wanting to roam closer to home.
